Humanist for Hire is a limited-liability company registered in Massachusetts, United States, since 2017, through which Troy collaborates with scholars across the globe. Services provided include all methods of editing, research assistance and manuscript preparation as well as translation from Italian and Latin into English.
Editing
- Critical editions: selecting variants and applying editorial consistency to transcriptions of historic works and audio files
- Development and story editing: evaluating arguments and overall organization and identifying venue-specific strategies for revision
- Line editing: thoroughly revising syntax, grammar and diction, especially useful for non-native writers of English
- Page proofs: judiciously and speedily revising final drafts, often with pencil and paper
Research
- Literature review: evaluating and compiling materials for specific research projects
- Fact-checking: verifying information in manuscripts and identifying scholarly consensus in inconclusive cases
- Bibliography and indexing: composing back matter and ensuring complete, correctly styled entries
- Permissions: identifying copyright holders and requesting reproduction authorization
Translation
- New translations: composing publishable translations of poetry and prose from Italian and Latin sources from any century
- Cribs: drafting literal translations intended to be reworked by other translators
- “Untranslating”: recovering texts that only survive in second-language translations
- Subtitles: drafting and importing film subtitles using Avid
